Years ago, when I was looking for a content management system to build a website, a friend recommended Joomla. Intrigued by the name, which is derived from my mother tongue, Kiswahili, I took a closer look at this system and found that it was just what I needed. I started to learn the basics and eventually created my first website with Joomla 1.5.
Then I decided to make the website multilingual. While English and German were readily available, there was no Swahili language. So I started to translate some of the texts myself, mostly for front-end user dialogs. At first I was not aware of the Joomla Translation community, but when I found out about it, I decided to share my translations. I got into contact with JM, and he set me up as the Swahili language coordinator in no time at all. He helped me via Skype and e-mail to overcome the initial technical difficulties and encouraged me to translate the rest of the files to create a complete Swahili language pack.
