GSoC'26 - Automated Workflow [Week Report #13]

By Weno Ndum Billy Hans on 2026-08-31 14:03 in Google Summer of Code Joomla Team

PRs #29 and #30 merged, closing the live computation and batched lookups work, and with them issues #17 and #21. Most of the week went on review comments and on the scheduler task installation in PR #34. That one turned out to be more involved than expected: creating the task on a fresh install is plain SQL, but on an existing site the task's id and its position in the permissions tree depend on what that site already has, so the row has to be built...

GSoC'26 - Automated Workflow [Week Report #12]

By Weno Ndum Billy Hans on 2026-08-24 14:01 in Google Summer of Code Joomla Team

This week was about what happens when automation goes wrong. Added per item failure tracking to the item state table, so a rule that fails records why and when. That feeds three things: the automation log shows the reason, the failure email includes it, and the same reason is compared against the stored one so an administrator is not emailed every fifteen minutes about a fault they already know about. Also made sure an unreadable rule can never take down a page or a scheduler run. Previously...

GSoC'26 - Automated Workflow [Week Report #11]

By Weno Ndum Billy Hans on 2026-08-17 14:00 in Google Summer of Code Joomla Team

Worked on making the condition system extensible, opened as PR #31. Until now the checks an administrator could use were hardcoded for articles. This week I added two core events so any extension can register its own condition fields and resolve its own values. Joomla's own checks then moved out of a plugin and into com_workflow itself, since they are not optional, and a sample plugin demonstrates how a third party would add theirs. Also added the ability for a check to take a typed...

GSoC'26 - Automated Workflow [Week Report #10]

By Weno Ndum Billy Hans on 2026-08-10 13:57 in Google Summer of Code Joomla Team

A good week for merges. PR #26, the nested condition builder, and PR #28, upcoming transitions, both went in, closing six issues between them. With those merged I moved to the execution model. Until now the system stored a computed deadline for each item, which my mentors had questioned: it means a value that can go stale, and it needs recomputing whenever anything it depends on changes. I replaced it with computing due-ness live at run time, opened as PR #29. That removed a...

GSoC'26 – Multi-category Support for Joomla [Week Report #11]

By Reda Mohamed on 2026-08-10 12:03 in Google Summer of Code Joomla Team

What I have done Renamed the term "secondary categories" to "additional categories" everywhere in the code. Updated the frontend UI. Now, all categories are shown together under one simple label: "Categories:...". Changed settings so "additional categories" options now depend on the "main category" settings to avoid conflicts. Updated the Articles module to show both the main category and additional categories, but only if the user has permission to see them. It also...

GSoC'26 - Translator Feedback Loop [Week Report #11]

By Krishna Gandhi on 2026-08-09 13:28 in Google Summer of Code Joomla Team

For an overview of how things are going, see the Kanban board of the project Done this week:   - Raised a pull request on the Joomla core repository, (the first to core of this project): editing a category quietly dropped any unpublished translation from its association group, and republishing did not bring it back. It was found while extending re-translation to categories, traced to a 2018 change meant for the frontend language switcher, verified against `5.4-dev`, and fixed...

GSoC'26 - Automated Workflow [Week Report #9]

By Weno Ndum Billy Hans on 2026-08-03 13:55 in Google Summer of Code Joomla Team

Started the upcoming transitions feature, which shows an administrator what automation is going to do before it does it. The form rework agreed with my mentors landed first: one automation rule per transition, the filter and the condition split into two separate builders rather than one combined tree, and the "interval" field renamed to "delay" since it is a delay before a deadline rather than a repeating interval. That split matters because the upcoming view needs to ask "which items" and...

GSoC'26 - Translator Feedback Loop [Week Report #10]

By Krishna Gandhi on 2026-08-02 17:11 in Google Summer of Code Joomla Team

For an overview of how things are going, see the Kanban board of the project Done this week:   - Ran the whole feedback loop end to end for the first time: an article was translated, corrected by hand, approved, and distilled into three rules, and re-translating the same source then produced the translation with all three corrections on its own, covering terminology, tone and a term kept untranslated.- Split saving from approving in the editor: Save now only saves, Approve...

GSoC'26 – Multi-category Support for Joomla [Week Report #10]

By Reda Mohamed on 2026-08-01 12:02 in Google Summer of Code Joomla Team

What I have done Added secondary category support to the com_banners and com_newsfeeds APIs. Updated the API to return secondary_categories in both single item and list responses. Improved API PATCH requests to be safer. If you do not send secondary_categories or tags, the old ones are kept. If you send an empty array [], they are removed. Wrote new Cypress system tests to check creating, updating, keeping, and removing secondary categories and...

GSoC'26 - Translator Feedback Loop [Week Report #9]

By Krishna Gandhi on 2026-07-27 19:33 in Google Summer of Code Joomla Team

For an overview of how things are going, see the Kanban board of the project Done this week:   - Built RAG: published translation rules are now retrieved and injected into the translation prompt, so the machine translation follows them (#7, #8, merged).- Retrieval works in three tiers: flatten the item's text, one indexed query for the published rules of the target language, then whole word matching, capped so the prompt stays bounded.- Live tested it in German across terminology,...

GSoC'26 - Automated Workflow [Week Report #8]

By Weno Ndum Billy Hans on 2026-07-27 13:53 in Google Summer of Code Joomla Team

This week was almost entirely the condition builder interface. The subform based approach from the previous week could not express nesting, and my mentors had asked for the subform to go. So I replaced it with a purpose built builder: a single condition tree, built by adding checks and expressions, serialised to one JSON value rather than a repeatable form. That meant removing the old condition form files, writing the builder itself, and adding constraints so operators and values stay valid...

GSoC'26 – Multi-category Support for Joomla [week Report #9]

By Reda Mohamed on 2026-07-25 17:04 in Google Summer of Code Joomla Team

What I have done Completed multi-category support for com_newsfeeds, including backend integration, saving/loading secondary categories, and category filtering. Implemented custom fields support for the API in both com_content (articles) and com_contact, ensuring fields assigned to secondary categories load and save correctly. Resolved API PATCH request behaviors to safely preserve existing tags when payloads are sent without a tags property. Continued extensive testing...

GSoC'26 - Translator Feedback Loop [Week Report #8]

By Krishna Gandhi on 2026-07-20 17:33 in Google Summer of Code Joomla Team

For an overview of how things are going, see the Kanban board of the project Done this week: - Defaulted the translation queue status filter to "review" on a first visit, so translators land on the items waiting for feedback while the filter stays clearable (merged, #18). - Backfilled pre-existing Joomla associations into the translation queue on install, so already-translated articles show their real per-language state instead of "No translation yet" and are not offered for...

GSoC'26 - Automated Workflow [Week Report #7]

By Weno Ndum Billy Hans on 2026-07-20 13:49 in Google Summer of Code Joomla Team

Two pull requests landed this week, completing the conditions and filters feature that the post-midterm plan put first. PR #15 added the condition evaluation engine and item filtering to the transition task plugin, and PR #16 added the interface for it. Together these let an automation rule say both which items it applies to and when it should fire, rather than firing for everything in a stage. Alongside that I reworked how a due automation is passed around the plugin,...
