Joomla! Volunteers Portal™Google Summer of Code Joomla Team (GSoC) Official
Google Summer of Code (GSoC) is a global online program initiated by Google in 2005 to encourage new contributors to participate in Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) projects. The program is designed and sponsored by Google to promote open source collaboration and provide hands-on experience to contributors in real-world software development.
Joomla's GSoC team facilitates Joomla's participation in the GSoC program. We are a team of passionate volunteers, each with a dedicated role, working together to develop new features and improve Joomla during the summer. Every project selected for Joomla under GSoC is guided by experienced mentors who provide support and help contributors achieve the project goals.

GSoC'26 - Automated Workflow [Week Report #16]
By Weno Ndum Billy Hans on 2026-09-19 11:44 in Google Summer of Code Joomla Team
PRs #42 through #45 merged, and the pull request to Joomla itself is open as joomla/joomla-cms#48480. #44 was the largest, and it came out of deliberately testing the paths I was most confident about. Three things were wrong and none of them produced an error. Transitions stored as "from any...

GSoC'26 - Automated Workflow [Week Report #15]
By Weno Ndum Billy Hans on 2026-09-12 11:41 in Google Summer of Code Joomla Team
Five PRs merged, #37, #38, #39 and #40 together, then #41 at the end of the week. Issues #2, #11, #20 and #24 closed. #39 settled the run-as user question, open since issue #2 in the first week. A rule executes its transition as a chosen user, so who that user is decides what the automation is...

GSoC'26 - Automated Workflow [Week Report #14]
By Weno Ndum Billy Hans on 2026-09-05 11:37 in Google Summer of Code Joomla Team
PRs #31, #34 and #36 merged, closing issues #13 and #18. #31 finished the extension points for conditions. Two events let any extension add its own checks to the builder and supply their values, so the check list is not limited to what core knows about. To prove the events actually work rather...

GSoC'26 - Automated Workflow [Week Report #13]
By Weno Ndum Billy Hans on 2026-08-31 14:03 in Google Summer of Code Joomla Team
PRs #29 and #30 merged, closing the live computation and batched lookups work, and with them issues #17 and #21. Most of the week went on review comments and on the scheduler task installation in PR #34. That one turned out to be more involved than...

GSoC'26 - Automated Workflow [Week Report #12]
By Weno Ndum Billy Hans on 2026-08-24 14:01 in Google Summer of Code Joomla Team
This week was about what happens when automation goes wrong. Added per item failure tracking to the item state table, so a rule that fails records why and when. That feeds three things: the automation log shows the reason, the failure email includes it, and the same reason is compared against the...

GSoC'26 - Automated Workflow [Week Report #11]
By Weno Ndum Billy Hans on 2026-08-17 14:00 in Google Summer of Code Joomla Team
Worked on making the condition system extensible, opened as PR #31. Until now the checks an administrator could use were hardcoded for articles. This week I added two core events so any extension can register its own condition fields and resolve its own values. Joomla's own checks then moved...

GSoC'26 - Automated Workflow [Week Report #10]
By Weno Ndum Billy Hans on 2026-08-10 13:57 in Google Summer of Code Joomla Team
A good week for merges. PR #26, the nested condition builder, and PR #28, upcoming transitions, both went in, closing six issues between them. With those merged I moved to the execution model. Until now the system stored a computed deadline for each item, which my mentors had...

GSoC'26 – Multi-category Support for Joomla [Week Report #11]
By Reda Mohamed on 2026-08-10 12:03 in Google Summer of Code Joomla Team
What I have done Renamed the term "secondary categories" to "additional categories" everywhere in the code. Updated the frontend UI. Now, all categories are shown together under one simple label: "Categories:...". Changed settings so "additional categories" options now depend on...

GSoC'26 - Translator Feedback Loop [Week Report #11]
By Krishna Gandhi on 2026-08-09 13:28 in Google Summer of Code Joomla Team
For an overview of how things are going, see the Kanban board of the project Done this week: - Raised a pull request on the Joomla core repository, (the first to core of this project): editing a category quietly dropped any unpublished translation from its association group, and...

GSoC'26 - Automated Workflow [Week Report #9]
By Weno Ndum Billy Hans on 2026-08-03 13:55 in Google Summer of Code Joomla Team
Started the upcoming transitions feature, which shows an administrator what automation is going to do before it does it. The form rework agreed with my mentors landed first: one automation rule per transition, the filter and the condition split into two separate builders rather than one combined...

GSoC'26 - Translator Feedback Loop [Week Report #10]
By Krishna Gandhi on 2026-08-02 17:11 in Google Summer of Code Joomla Team
For an overview of how things are going, see the Kanban board of the project Done this week: - Ran the whole feedback loop end to end for the first time: an article was translated, corrected by hand, approved, and distilled into three rules, and re-translating the same source then...
